Facebook or SEO whats a marketer to do?

by | Jun 7, 2018

So I got asked which is best SEO or Facebook adverts?

Love those questions

It depends what Market you’re in BUT lets look at this. So one of our clients is in eCigs. There is a LOT of money on the table in that market with search volumes and traffic exceeding 300k/month for some sites.

Now lets say a potential customer sits down at his desktop or is browsing on his mobile (more likely these days) and types into Google

Buy The Milkman Pudding

Random I know but trust me it’s a flavor for eCigs. Pretty much that is a wallet out phrase. This guy literally has his credit card in hand. get your job right and he will use it right now.

Anyway up will pop a load of results, a mixture of Adwords, SERPS and some Map pack.

Let’s assume he clicks one and visits the site. If the site has done its job right and looks good and does not piss him off too much in the checkout flow he buys it. Cool.

We have a TOF of the search phrase
A MOF of the site and checkout process
A BOF in that he becomes a customer

THAT is SEO in action. For the most part that guy was looking for you, he came to you. He found you and for the most part you probably have not pissed him off.

Now let’s look at Facebook. Same guy.

He is NOT on Facebook looking for The Milkman Pudding. He is on Facebook checking out his mates and general stuff.

Up pops your advert or boosted post.

Now he might click it and visit your site but YOU have dragged him there. He wasn’t looking for you. You might even piss him off with your advert!

This is the difference between SEO and Facebook advertising.

Now of course Facebook advertising WORKS but with SEO your audience is a little warmer in that they are looking for you and have control. Once you have a warm audience in Facebook things get easier as you’ve warmed them up a bit and are now Re-targeting.

My advice?

Of course Facebook advertising WORKS but with SEO your audience is a little warmer. This is of course when your TOF is targeting cold audiences. Once you have a warm audience in Facebook things get easier as you’ve warmed them up a bit and are now Re-targeting.

To your Marketing success
Mark.
